What the The Coost crew are listening to right now….
I fell for Seven Davis Jr when Mr Beatnick dropped a party banger on tastemaker Myles Mac’s Melbourne Deepcast earlier this year. Let Somebody Love You is brash, almost to the point of absurdity, but it brings a hell of a boogie and I’ll be damned if I’m missing out on that.
Now, Seven Davis Jr has let a debut full length off the leash and it’s turning a few heads. A trained gospel singer from California who variously lists Aretha Franklin and Portishead as influences, Seven (or is it Mr Davis?) has a bit of a thing for the dance floor.
The PR spin has him sitting “comfortably alongside recent releases from Kendrick Lamar and D’Angelo -all three seek to explore their take on twisted funk and classic soul. Kendrick channeled these influences through hip hop, D’Angelo through neo soul whereas Seven takes house and disco as his pallette.” Does he live up to the hype? You decide.
