Many of you may have already started playing Overwatch by the time you read this, as it came out this week. For those of you who have not had the chance to try the demo from two weeks ago, well, you’re probably scratching your head as to why a bunch of your gamer friends keep talking about “high noon” or “cavalries’ here” and telling you to ryu waga tekki go fuck yourself.
Don’t worry, soon those quotes and memes will extend to many more people you know. This game not only proves that Blizzard is great at creating competitive games, they also do well with personality. Each character has a certain charisma, reminiscent of Valve’s Team Fortress series and the Pixar-quality character shorts released to further this game’s quality.
For your viewing pleasure…
My experience with the beta has left me thirsty for more action, despite feeling overwhelmed at the number of characters that you could chose from (the full roster of 21 characters were available in the beta and there’s word of more on the way for free after the game release).
With the ebb and flow of the battle, I started using different characters depending on the success of myself and my team, and also to adjust to the opposing team’s strategy. Before I knew it, I’d grown pretty adept at many of them. I gravitated towards defensive support characters like Bastion and Torbjörn, as they fit more my playstyle of taking advantage of choke points and turning the tide of battle through superior planning.
The quality of this is above many other betas and demos I have had the chance to try, and the fact that I immediately pre-ordered the game after it ended is a testament to that. If you’re not into first-person shooters or games not within the usual military shooter formula, don’t waste your time. But if you don’t mind seeing something new in the multiplayer shooter genre, this game is highly recommended.
Get it, I did and I wish I was playing it now instead of writing about it. So yeah, I’ll see you later in the game love. I’ll have a review once I have at least a week of play logged on.
What do you think? Does using Bastion really lessen the fun because his weaknesses aren’t as apparent? Do you feel that this game feels too similar to Battleborne? Let us know in the comments section and follow us on Twitch at https://www.twitch.tv/ejpal .
Enrico and his cat, Oswin, are always looking for new games to play when not worrying about the Red Sox season. A former Montreal resident, he now lives in Toronto eating all their korean bbq.
